08/12/2020Op-ed: Stop talking – get started on circular healthcare
04/02/2021PVC is the most used plastic for disposable medical devices such as oxygen masks and tubing, IV bags, nasal cannulaes and many other life-saving products. As PVC is easily recyclable and most of these devices are used for a very short time on non-infectious patients, more and more medical device manufacturers, hospitals and recyclers around the world are looking to recycling.
In a special issue dedicated to medical PVC recycling, AMI reports on the various schemes around the world. Established in 2014 and funded by VinylPlus, RecoMed is such a scheme. RecoMed was originally a pilot collection scheme to assess the feasibility of collecting PVC medical devices from hospitals in the UK. Now it involves more than 40 hospitals with 100 on the waiting list.
