For the first time since the pandemic, the PVC industry gathered in-person for PVC 2024 Edinburgh, hosted at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre from April 16-18. The event, which successfully attracted over 400 attendees, marked a significant return to face-to-face interactions and set a strong forward path toward sustainable practices in the industry.
Ole Grøndahl Hansen, PVCMed Alliance Project Leader, delivered an address entitled Reframing the Narrative: Seeking a New Paradigm in PVC Industry Communication Amid NGO Criticisms. Hansen's presentation tackled the pressing need for the PVC industry to evolve its communication strategies to effectively counter criticisms from NGOs and to enhance its overall credibility.
In another highlight, Inge Dewitte of VinylPlus® Med/Denuo, provided an update on the advancements in collecting and recycling PVC medical devices in Belgium. Dewitte also excitedly announced the expansion of the VinylPlus Med scheme into France, a new venture in partnership with medical device manufacturer Medtronic and consultancy Terra, aiming to replicate the successful recycling model beyond Belgian borders.
The conference featured a diverse agenda that included sessions from leading researchers and industry professionals who discussed innovations and strategies for advancing sustainability within the industry. These discussions underscored the event's theme, Roadmap to a Sustainable Future, emphasizing the collective efforts needed to drive change.
The next edition of the conference is eagerly anticipated and scheduled for 2027. The PVCMed Alliance continues to foster dialogue about the use of PVC in healthcare applications.
