13/08/2015The Danish Health and Medicines Authority has recently updated its guidelines on how Danish municipalities and regions can reduce the use of classified phthalates in medical devices through their general purchasing policy.
In updating the 2013 guidelines, the Authority reviewed latest research and conducted 15 interviews with representatives from municipal and regional purchasing departments as well as 3 interviews with medical device distributors.
The interviews showed that reducing classified phthalates in medical devices is a priority in purchasing departments, which is partly achieved by specifying non-classified phthalate alternatives in tenders. On the supply side, medical device distributors report of a rising demand for these devices and that producers are putting more and more medical devices with alternative plasticisers on the market.
